Tanabata is a festival that is celebrated every year on July 7 (or August 7 in some places). When this time of year comes around, people write their wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo trees, along with decorations. You can see this almost everywhere.

This time, Kids Web Japan has chosen a story that relates to the Tanabata festival. While there are stories that are similar to Tanabata in many Asian countries, the Japanese version of the story is a mixture of a Chinese legend and local beliefs, so the story is told differently in different areas of Japan. Tanabata is also known as the story of Altair (the Cowherd Star) and Vega (the Weaver Star).

A long time ago, there was a young man who lived in a small village. One day as he was on his way home from working in the fields, he discovered something amazing: the most beautiful clothes he had ever seen. He wanted the clothes very badly, so he quietly put them in his basket and started on his way.

Just then, a voice called out, "Excuse me." The boy was startled and said, "What? Did somebody just call me?" A beautiful girl answered, "Yes, I did. Please give back my robe of feathers. I live in heaven, and I just came down to this pond to take a bath. Without my robe of feathers, I can't go back."

The girl looked as though she were about to cry, but the boy pretended not to know and answered, "Robe of feathers? I don't know anything about that." Unable to go back to heaven, the goddess was forced to remain on earth. She began to live with the young man.

The goddess's name was Tanabata. Tanabata and the young man got married and were living together happily. One day several years later, though, while the young man was working in the fields, Tanabata found her robe of feathers hidden between two beams in the ceiling. "I knew it. He's been hiding it," she thought to herself. She put on the robe of feathers and right away began to feel like the goddess she had once been.

That evening when the young man came home, he was surprised to see Tanabata wearing the robe of feathers, standing in front of the house. Tanabata began rising up toward heaven and called out to the young man, "If you love me, weave a thousand pairs of straw sandals and bury them around the bamboo tree. If you do that, we'll be sure to see each other again. Please do this. I'll be waiting for you." Tanabata rose up higher and higher and returned home to heaven.

The young man was very sad, but he knew what to do. On the very next day he began making straw sandals. He continued weaving them day and night. At last he finally finished making his last pair and buried them all around the bamboo tree.

Right away the bamboo tree began to get bigger and bigger, and it grew higher and higher into the sky. The young man immediately began climbing the tall bamboo tree. He climbed higher and higher until he was almost able to reach heaven. But because he had wanted to see Tanabata with all his heart, he had hurried when making the straw sandals and had actually made only 999 pairs. The tree stopped one step short, and the young man's hand could not reach heaven.

"Hey! Tanabata! Tanabata!" the young man cried out to heaven. "Oh, it's you!" Tanabata exclaimed. She extended her hand to the young man and pulled him over the clouds. "Tanabata, I missed you so much," the young man said. The two of them were overjoyed to see each other once again.

Tanabata's father was not happy that she had married a man from the world below. He gave the young man hard work to do, hoping to make him miserable. "You'll guard the melon field for three days and three nights," he said. Watching the melon field made the young man extremely thirsty, but if he ate one of the melons, it was said that something terrible would happen. Tanabata told him, "You absolutely cannot eat one of those melons."

But as the three days went by, the young man grew thirsty and became unable to bear it any longer. He reached for a melon. The instant he did, water burst forth from the fruit and became a flowing river. "Darling!" "Tanabata!" In an instant the two were pulled apart from each other.

The two lovers looking across the river at each other became the stars Altair and Vega. Tanabata's father allows them to meet, but only once a year, on the night of July 7. To this day these two stars face each other across the Milky Way, shining brightly.

so the boy fell in love. he fell in fierce, passionate love with the girl he met on the shore.

it was on the fish planet
the boy was a skilled fisherman and his name was.. Sam

the boy named sam dreamed that he and the girl he met got on a boat and sailed away into the shining galaxy.

but did Sam love the girl he was with or the brilliant galaxy around him. so the adventure of life goes on
Head : last time he sailed off into the shining galaxy wit the girl

Fish Girl : right there was only one ship that could sail from the fish planet out into the galaxy. that ship belonged to a king.

Head : a king's ship a ship.. a good ship like that isn't just going to fall into your hands.

Fish Girl : Right. but one day, the king issued a proclamation.

whoever defeated the squid emperor and brought back his blue blood would have any wish granted.
you see on the fish planet, there was a squid emperor who ravaged the land as he pleased every night.

the boy, Sam, resolved himself to defeat the squid emperor and get the ship that could sail into the galaxy

so the adventure of life goes on
Head : what secret did sam the squid piercer and the girls have
Sakana : they ate squid , on the fish planet, squids are the servants of evil
it was forbidden for their flesh to pass your lips,
but still, the two ate together
Head : i guess he wanted to be sam the squid-eater too.
Sakana : they shared that dark secret and their bond grew even deeper
-and the adventure of life goes on-

Sakana : "If you want something, don't falter! said the girl
they had learned where the squid emperor was, but in the previous year, a huge storm had risen and the water had become dangerous.
Sam the Squid-piercer faltered, So the girl berated Sam
Head : Yeah. if you really want something, you can't be afraid to take risks. That girl got it right
Sakana : and that's when Sam the Squid-Piercer left the girl and the cottage, and went out into the wild and dangerous sea
="so the adventure of life goes on"=

Sakana : They begin to fight. in the dark, wild night sea
Sam fights on with his spear. And in a fierce battle that cannot be described in words, Sam slew the squid emperor and took his blue blood.
Head : Damn... no details on the battle scene, huh?
Sakana : From in its bottle, the squid emperor's blue blood sparkled and lit up the dark night sea.
Head : sounds like legendary stuff
Sakana : Sam took the blue blood and went back to the king
Sam: "My King! i Have brought the blood as promised here it is"
Sakana : The king took the bottle and suddenly drank the blue blood. That blood was the one potion that could remove the king's magical immortality and end his eternal life.
King : "Thank you, Sam. Now i can finally sleep and never awaken."
Head : That was certainly a twist
Sakana : this juice wasn't very good.
Head : So, what happened to Sam?

=so the adventure of life goes on=

Sakana : The king offered him the throne.
He had intended all along to give his kingdom to the one that brought him the curse-breaking blue blood
But Sam refused the offer.
Sam : "My king, i only desired your galactic ship i wanted to sail it out into the shining galaxy. I do not want your throne. i do not want your kingdom"
Head : this is a great story. I just have to listen to your story, fish girl, and i can keep on going.
Sakana : And the king replied thus :
King : "Fine , young man. i promised anything you desire. i will not break my word , you will have my galactic ship.
However, young man... Sam the Squid-piercer, Heed well these words. To sail that ship, you must spill the red blood of the girl you love. Leave but a drop, and the engine will not move."
Sakana : Yes, Sam had to kill the girl he loved, if he did not, the ship would not sail.
King : "Now take it, The ship belongs to you."

-The adventure of life goes on-

"Sam killed the girl.
To sail into the shining galaxy, he offered her red blood to the ship's engine. In the end,
what Sam truly loved was not the girl, but his longing for the world out in the galaxy.
The girl he loved had never been more than a flower adorning his journey.
Sam got on the ship and sailed out into the galaxy.
But soon, Sam realized...
Though he was in the galaxy he had dreamt of,
all those worlds were different from the fish planet of his birth.
The fish planet was but one world in the vast galaxy.
The galaxy was not some far off world.
Sam had been living in its brilliance all along."
Why did he kill the girl? (Head) Is that all?
(Head) Is that really the end of the story?
(Head) Fine. I'm done with your story.
(Head) Get out.
